Preparing for a first legal consultation
What to bring and how to frame your question so that a first meeting produces useful, practical guidance.
Published
A productive first consultation depends less on legal knowledge than on preparation. Clients who arrive with the underlying documents, a short chronology of events and a clear statement of what they want to achieve generally receive more specific guidance in less time.
Bring the written record: agreements, correspondence, receipts, notices, identity or registration documents and anything filed with an authority. Where documents are missing, note what exists and where it is held.
Set out the outcome you are seeking. Some clients want a dispute resolved quickly; others want a position protected, a risk reduced or a document put in order. The preferred outcome shapes the advice.
Finally, ask about scope and fees. A clear understanding of what the firm will do, what it will not do, and on what basis it charges avoids misunderstanding later.
